Training for Refugee activist group in Amsterdam

Nonviolent Communication and conflict mediation training with refugees working with refugees, an inter-sectional feminist group that aims to create new spaces for collective thinking and acting between queer & trans people of color (POC) refugees in the Netherlands.

Sehaq is a queer refugees collective in Amsterdam mainly centered on the experience of LGBTQ refugees from the Middle East & North Africa. Sehaq’s work focuses on the three following aims: 1) creating a safe space for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans* and queer (LGBTQ) asylum seekers, refugees and undocumented people in the Netherlands, 2) community building and awareness through organizing workshops, parties, online and offline platforms, meetings and get-to-togethers, 3) networking with other organizations that work to support LGBTQ asylum seekers, refugees and undocumented people in the Netherlands.

“We believe that the workshop will help us learn how to understand and transform the ways we relate to people that are based on violent structures of the incarceral system of punishment. the communication skills that we can learn from this workshop will be very useful for us as a collective internally, and also externally when we are in conflict situations with other refugees and other activists in our spaces. the fact that jeyanthy is a person of color giving this training is very important and difficult to find because we rarely have access to NVC trainers who understand our non-western and refugee identities which have a very culturally specific way of communicating.”

Sehaq is een queer/ LGBTQ vluchtelingencollectief in Amsterdam, dat zich voornamelijk richt op de ervaring van LGBTQ vluchtelingen uit het Midden-Oosten en Noord-Afrika.

Sehaq richt zich op de volgende drie doelstellingen:
1) het creëren van een veilige ruimte voor lesbische, homoseksuele, biseksuele, transgender en queer (LGBTQ) asielzoekers, vluchtelingen en ongedocumenteerden in Nederland,
2) gemeenschapsvorming en bewustwording door het organiseren van workshops, feesten, online en offline platforms, vergaderingen en bijeenkomsten,
3) netwerken met andere organisaties die zich inzetten voor de ondersteuning van LGBTQ-asielzoekers, vluchtelingen en mensen zonder papieren in Nederland.

Wij geloven dat de workshop ons zal helpen begrijpen hoe we geconditioneerd zijn om te denken in termen van goed of fout, beschuldigen en straffen en hoe we dat kunnen transformeren, zodat we beter met situaties kunnen
omgaan, waarin we het niet met elkaar eens zijn. De communicatieve vaardigheden die we in deze workshop kunnen leren, zullen nuttig zijn voor ons als collectief intern (voor de onderlinge samenwerking), maar ook extern wanneer we in conflict komen met andere vluchtelingen en andere activisten in onze ruimtes. Het feit, dat Jeyanthy een persoon/vrouw van kleur is, is belangrijk voor deze training. Zo iemand is moeilijk te vinden. Er zijn weinig NVC ( Geweldloze Communicatie) trainers, die onze niet-westerse en vluchtelingenidentiteit begrijpen met onze cultuurspecifieke manier van communiceren.
